Product Review: Old El Paso Tortilla Stuffers

Sometimes brands send me things for free - but this is not one of those times. This one came out of my pocket...unfortunately.

I know - it seems like a bad idea. Nothing pre-packaged that can be eaten in 60 seconds is going to taste good - but I had my hopes. I also had coupons. So I bought a couple of packages of these Old El Paso Tortilla Stuffers. Last night I had to work late so by the time I got around to eating - it was 8pm and I was starving. I needed something quick and this fit the bill.

Now I knew that this package of pre-cooked "Mexican" would need some help. So I went to the fridge and pulled out everything I could find for toppings.

And I piled them on - goat cheese, regular cheese, sour cream and salsa (from the Farmers Market in Iowa).

Unfortunately - it didn't really help. The product was dry and there really wasn't any sauce to speak of. The meat was kinda funky as well - really dry.

So all in all - not such a great experience. I covered it with enough stuff to make it edible - but didn't really love it. I used about 1/2 the package to make 2 small tacos.

Just thought I'd share since it's a new product...have any of you tried it? Or is there another new product you've tried that was really good?

  1. "Nothing pre-packaged that can be eaten in 60 seconds is going to taste good"

I have to disagree with you there. It might not be good for you, but some pre-packaged crap actually tastes good. Not as good as fresh, wholesome, well-prepared food...but it sure can taste good.

On the other hand, the tortilla stuffers look like garbage.

  2. these are so terrible, I even considered writing general mills to complain. I wrapped the filling in tortilla shells and added goat cheese and vegitarian refried beans and I couldn't choke it down. so I ended up having cheese and bean wraps for dinner. horrible product.

  3. You are so right on these. Bought it because a kind lady gave me a free sample in the store (I must have been starving to buy it), you hit the nail on the head here--dry, dry and more dry. I'm not even sure there is beef in this. To Old El Paso's credit, the seasoning of this 'crap' is just right...not too hot, not too mild, can't polish a piece of crap with seasoning. And I usually love every Mexican product out there.

  4. I'm a bit surprised at the comments here. I bought a couple of these at the grocery yesterday, and then decided to make a quick meal instead of cooking. All I added was grated cheese, and I thought the carne asada was pretty good!

Just goes to show you that taste in these things is pretty much personal. My tastes do tend to be on the simple side.

I was thinking it would be easy to prepare in a pot by just adding a bit of liquid and heating. Sure was simple to just heat and put in a tortilla. And here I was thinking it was pretty good...

  5. I was also surprised..pleasantly.I don't expect ANYTHING out of a pkg to be perfect so I warmed it up with a bit of salsa because it looked dry and it came out just fine for a quick on the run meal.WOuld I serve it for 12 at a family then I NEVER serve anything out of a pkg for a big meal.

  6. You know I read the reviews and in spite of all the bad stuff I read I went ahead and tried it anyway. I had the mesquite chicken and by itself it's not very appealing but inside of a tortilla with an additional ingredient pretty tasty. So what I did was heat it in the microwave for a minute, spoon some of it on a tortilla, add tons of shredded cheese, close the tortilla and secure it with toothpicks, then I fried it. The cheese melted and the filling steamed inside the tortilla, so it's pretty much a chimichanga.

  7. I have never written a review on food items, but this was awful, I had to let el paso know. I also cooked their fiesta rice and it was not awful, but very bad. One bite and in the trash. How can anyone actually approve something like this for marketing?

  8. i actually tried the chicken mesquite one , it was great ! i was a bit skeptical...but from the moment i opened it , it seemed great
I also brought the steak one...and as soon as i opened smelled disgusting
ive seen all bad reviews on the steak and i agree. the chicken one is the best and all i did was add cheese and corn chips on the side...yum !
