Frozen Lunch Review: Stouffers Farmers Harvest Roasted Chicken & Bowtie Pasta

Again - the coupon bug hit me. I would say 9 times out of 10 - I'm the freak with the binder slowly going through Meijer weeding through pages of coupons hoping to get a deal. It's a little tedious at times but also fun and a bit of a "rush" getting a deal. 

I had a coupon for $1 off 2 Stouffer's Farmers Harvest meals and I chose the Roasted Chicken & Bowtie Pasta and the Vegetable Lasagna. They were like $2.75 each and then $1 off - so $4.50 for two.

And here's the reality in the container. 

  • Flavor - the pasta was really good - I liked the flavor a lot of the pesto/cream sauce. The vegetables were also fresh-tasting with a nice crunch to them. I'm realizing I don't love red peppers in frozen meals though - not cooked enough or something.  
  • Pasta - good and there was quite a bit of it. 
  • Cooking - Excellent - no issues! 
  • Cost - 2 for $4.50 after coupon
  • Nutrition - 430 calories, 18 grams fat (oh regular Stouffer's - boo!)
  • Allergens - not sure
  • Fullness Factor - good! I wasn't hungry after and there were a lot of vegetables!
I also tried the Vegetable Lasagna and let me just say - it did not look like that photo! It was really tasty but it deflated about an inch in the pan while it was cooking which made it not look so hot. But taste was good. 

Overall - I like these two meals but probably won't buy them again because I don't get many coupons for them and tend to stick with the Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice varieties. So the Stouffer's gets a "meh" from me. (Thanks to Charles Nelson Reilly for that one.)

Product Review: Van de Kamp's Parchment Bake (+ BOGO Coupon)

My friends at Foodbuzz sent me some coupons to try Van de Kamp's Parchment Bake for free and tell all of you about it! 

I am a Meijer shopper and was able to find the "classic grill" flavor. 

I was hoping to find the Garlic Butter flavor but figured I'd try what I could find. 

They are individually packaged which is nice for single folks or a couple. It can't get any easier - you just take it out of the box and onto the pan!

They puff up pretty big - I used the other half of the pan to make some fries to go along with them for dinner.

And here's the finished product. I think the fish was flaky and a pretty good texture but the sauce on the "classic grill" wasn't good. The amount of black pepper was completely overwhelming.

Like I said - I wouldn't mind trying the garlic butter flavor - but if you're not a fan of black pepper - I'd avoid this one.

Frozen Lunch Review: Lean Cuisine Market Creations Mushroom Tortelloni

Lean Cuisine has these new Market Creations that come in a bag and steam in the microwave. I decided to try one since they were on sale. I went for the Mushroom Tortelloni

I had pretty high expectations I must admit. I wasn't even sure when I got to work how it would cook - I hadn't thought that far ahead. But the whole bag is the steamer - so  you just pop it in the microwave. The one negative I see in this is that you need a bowl or something to put it in once it's cooked. I'm not one of those people that takes frozen meals out of their tray and plates them...but in this instance you don't have a choice. 

And here's the after in one of our pretty bowls at work. 


  • Flavor - it's creamy but not cheesy - something I always find a disappointment but I need to expect. There was way too much black pepper. There were a lot of veggies and they tasted good - so that was a plus. 
  • Pasta - it was okay - a little gummy and I didn't get a lot of mushroom flavor. 
  • Cooking - Excellent - no issues! 
  • Cost - Lean Cuisines were 5 for $11 I think. 
  • Nutrition - 280 calories, 7 grams fat
  • Allergens - milk, wheat, egg
  • Fullness Factor - not good - the portion size is small - you definitely need something on the side. 

And the verdict - thumbs down. The other down side is that there is no Delicious Rewards code on bagged products - so it doesn't count on their program. Small portion, too much black pepper and no rewards = not buying again.

Food Hussy Faves!

I was just bragging up a product favorite of mine to a coworker and decided I should share some of my favorites with all of you. It's just random things I love and am subsequently now addicted to. These are all non-paid, unsolicited loves - just to be clear. 

First up - V8 Splash Berry Blend. I really don't like fruit juice - too much acid. But one day Larry was drinking this and I was thirsty and too lazy to get off the couch and tried it. HOLY COW! I was instantly addicted! It's fruity, sweet and refreshing. This is a staple and in the cart every single week!

Ah the cinnamon sugar butter spread from Land O'Lakes. I first bought this because of a coupon I had which made it free. So sure - I'll try something free. But again - instantly hooked. We went through the first container in about 2 days! It's really perfect on toast and makes boring whole grain toast a snack! (Price: $2.50)

I have problem hair...seriously. It's thick, coarse and curly - but not curly like I just stepped out of a salon ad - curly like I look like I just woke up pretty much all day long. It's frizzy and just a pain in the a**. In my never-ending trial of every curly haired product on the market - I came across Garnier's Wonder Waves Spray. I love it! It keeps my hair curly like a spray gel would but it's much lighter and not sticky and crunchy. It's my favorite! Of course - I don't think they are really making it any more because the ONLY place I can find it is CVS. So every time they have their 3 for $10 promotion (plus Extra Bucks) I buy 3 of them (I just did yesterday). This stuff is my favorite and is far more effective than the EXPENSIVE Ouidad that is supposedly made for curly hair. I tried that once - at $22/bottle - my hair was frizzier and drier than if I'd let it air dry all day!

I like American cheese and always was fine with the Kraft singles slices...until my husband came along. He then introduced me to Land O'Lakes American cheese (I know - LOL should throw me some goodies for all this love I'm sending their way!). This stuff is the best! We go through a pound in about 3 days (mostly hubby). It's creamy and just so tasty! Plus - we had it - unbeknownst to us - on one of our first dates. So here's a secret tip for you - Quatman's uses LOL cheese! Also - they used to be a grocery store and still sell deli meat & cheese - and here's the best part - it's $2/lb cheaper at Quatman's than at Meijer/Kroger!!!! So - next time you're there for a burger - get some cheese to take home! You won't be sorry!

Last up for today is Brianna's Poppy Seed Dressing. My good friend Katie introduced this to me at Bible Study. We'd get together for dinner before and she would always have this for the salad. I swear I tried to sneak it out the door in my purse! It's creamy but not like ranch - more mellow.

Cookoff: Zip 'N Steam vs. Parchment Bags

I'm all about convenience that doesn't sacrifice quality - and I think I've found it in a couple of fairly new products! 

So today - it's the Cookoff between Ziploc Zip 'N Steam and PaperChef.com's Parchment Bags!

First up - the gracious folks at PaperChef provided me with a huge box of Parchment goodies - I'll be making more things from these folks in the weeks to come. (giveaway coming for you too!) I had paper, muffin cups, bags and more to sample! I started with the bags since I had salmon and veges to bake.

Cost: 10 count of bags - $3.27 (not bad!)

The competitor - everybody knows their name - Ziploc! I bought these myself...


The nice thing about the Ziploc version is really the quickness factor and the cooking instructions are on every bag. I have to say - that helped a lot! I was making salmon & asparagus for dinner - I didn't really feel comfortable microwaving $8 worth of salmon - so I just did the asparagus in the steam bag. 

I guess to be a true cookoff - I should have tried it! I just wasn't brave enough - salmon is expensive. 

Here's the salmon in the parchment bag. I just coated it with salt, pepper, rosemary and olive oil then laid the asparagus across the top. The bag was a little awkward to get the large piece of fish into - but there was ample room. You could have easily just cooked two bags so we could have each had our own.

And the after baking of the salmon & asparagus. I have to say - it was very appetizing! The parchment paper was a little crispy on the outside and I couldn't wait to dive in! The asparagus absorbed some of the olive oil and the salmon was cooked to perfection! I used the instructions on their website for time to cook salmon - I think it was 16 minutes.

Here was the Ziploc version of asparagus - steamed nicely and bright green. It was a little dry and next time I would add a touch of butter into the bag with the veggies.

Here's a pic of my healthy and delicious dinner! Steamed asparagus, wild rice and baked salmon. Deliciousness that I will be making again!!!

So - how about the cookoff? What did I think?

Ziploc - a little cheaper and more widely available, these bags were great with the instructions printed on every bag. I do think the veggies came out a little dry but would likely be better with a little butter added. The steaming is VERY quick in these as well.

PaperChef - very affordable - basically the same price and they are available at Kroger and Hy-Vee stores (Hy-Vee is my grocery store of choice back home in IA). I have to say I trust the parchment bags a little more with meat. Most likely - if I'm making fish again - I would use these.

I have to admit - I wasn't the biggest fan of her on American Idol (she was a judge for seasons 8 & 9) - but she's got a huge resume to back up her skills - having written songs for the likes of Pink, Rascal Flatts, Celine Dion and so many more! She also co-owns Arthouse Entertainment, a music-publishing venture, with Bug Music, which has published such hits as B.O.B’s “Nothin’ On You,” Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” and “Grenade,” Cee-Lo Green’s “Forget You,” and Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me.”

She also wrote a book entitled A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love and American Idol. She's been through a lot in her life with debilitating stage fright, an eating disorder, caring for her Mom during a fatal bout of cancer, and oh yeah - sitting between Paula and Simon!

streetpops - the new cool kids in OTR

There are some new cool kids on the block in OTR - StreetPops

They had a grand opening shindig last weekend and my boss stopped in & took some fun pics for me!

These are all-natural gourmet popsicles - with flavors ranging from chocolate to blueberry merlot - everyone is sure to find a flavor they like.

They also added some fun kid art to the freezer!

MMMMMMM! Lots of streetpops fans!

They started as a cart showing up at places like Findlay Market but recently opened a store-front in the old ForkHeartKnife location.

Large pops are $3 and small are $2 - so it's not a bad price either!


I'm guessing lemon buttermilk!

Owner Sara Bornick will have the store open Thursday-Sunday from noon - 6pm until the summer heat hits us. The grand opening is Friday March 30!

Food Hussy Recipe: Homemade Sloppy Joes

Sometimes I buy hamburger and have no idea what to do with it - so I take to the internet and google my butt off! Such was the case this day and then I came across a recipe for homemade sloppy joes. Larry likes sloppy joes and we had hamburger buns - so let's give it a whirl! 

It's pretty simple: hamburger, onion, tomato sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, garlic, chili powder and brown sugar. I used Red Gold tomato sauce after those folks were nice enough to send me a product sample pack! 

Stir it all together and then simmer for 15 minutes. It seems pretty thin at first but thickens up over the 15 minutes. 

And the results shouldn't be a surprise - this stuff was delicious! It was also better than the canned stuff! I'll definitely be making this one again and again! 


Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • lb extra lean ground beef

Directions:


  1. 1
    In a large skillet over medium heat, brown beef until no longer any pink; drain.
  2. 2
    Add onions and garlic and cook until onions are transparent.
  3. 3
    Add remaining sauce ingredients and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer; reduce heat and simmer until thickened (about 15 minutes).
  4. 4
    Meanwhile, split buns and spread with butter. Place on a baking sheet and sprinkle with garlic and parmesan cheese. Place under broiler and broil until toasted golden brown. Set aside until sauce is done.
  5. 5
    Taste sauce and correct seasonings, if needed. Serve with toasted buns.

Al Amir Cafe

A few weeks back I saw another bloggers recommendation of Al-Amir in Cincinnati. I trust her opinions and decided to check it out myself. We weren't exactly sure when we were walking where it was - but it's in the former "little" Mythos on Vine. 

The first thing on the menu that caught was the greek fries - I've had some instances of greek fries other places and had to try these. They were very different than what I had before at Greek to Me - but these were even better! Those basically just had a lemon seasoning salt on top - these were coated with a seasoning PLUS olive oil and feta. Delish!

I got the gyro and it was fine - nothing too special but it was good. 

Beth got the greek salad that Liz recommended and shocker - I was drooling and wishing I had gotten it! She was a bit worried since it looked heavily seasoned but it wasn't spicy or anything like that. It definitely looked tasty.

Why Should You Go? I'll say this - I was a bit worried because one note said it was the same owners as Jordan Valley - which I was NOT a fan of. But again - Liz recommended. I would recommend but for take-out. There are maybe 5 tables and while the kitchen area didn't seem to bad - the tables and walls on the eating side - are dirty. But like I said - the food is good and affordable. Just get it take out and head to Fountain Square.

As we headed down - I had to get change for the meter and went into Freshii. I thought - oh I'll just buy a cookie and get change back. So I picked up this one. IT WAS $2.50 FOR A DAMN SMALL COOKIE!

I have to say - not worth it. It wasn't that good.

Food Hussy Recipe: Creamy Linguine with Shrimp & Veggies

Sometimes the Mom & Savings bloggers amaze me - you have to be so committed to stick with something every single week. I tried meal planning a few weeks ago - and I was good for the one week - but it's so much work! Searching for recipes, making the shopping list, couponing towards the list, then shopping and then cooking everything that week. Oye! I'm lucky if I can do all that once/month! 

But when I did - I had all the goodies for Creamy Linguine with Shrimp & Veggies from June 2011 Cooking Light.  I was particularly excited about this because you used some of the pasta water in the sauce and while I've often heard of this - I haven't done it - until now! 

It was a pretty basic set of ingredients: whole wheat linguine, broccoli, , butter, onion, mushrooms, shrimp, carrot, cream cheese and some seasonings.

I always pop the ends of the shrimp before I cook them - who wants to deal with a shell when you're eating?!

This also made good use of one pot by cooking the pasta & broccoli together! 

In the pan, you saute onion, mushroom, shrimp & carrot...

Then you add in the magical pasta water - at least that's what the cooking shows make it seem like. I'm not really sure why it's so magical - but I tried it!

Then you mix in the pasta water and cream cheese...stir stir stir.


Then serve! It wasn't overly creamy but it was nice. I tend to like cheesy things but this gave you the feeling of eating a cheesy, creamy sauce but it's pretty light and healthy - well at least it came out of Cooking Light. :-)

It was a little bland - so maybe adding some red pepper flakes or something like that might jazz it up. All in all though - good dish. It was also in the "Budget Cooking" category - so fyi - it's $2.42 per serving.


Creamy Linguine with Shrimp and Veggies




  • quarts water
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided 
  • 8 ounces uncooked linguine
  • 3 cups small broccoli florets 
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter 
  • 1 cup chopped onion 
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms 
  • garlic cloves, minced
  • 12 ounces peeled and deveined medium shrimp 
  • julienne-cut carrot 
  • 3/4 cup 1/3-less-fat cream cheese 
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 

Preparation

  1. 1. Bring 6 quarts water to a boil in a saucepan. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt and pasta; cook 5 minutes. Add broccoli; cook 3 minutes or until pasta is al dente. Drain through a sieve over a bowl, reserving 1/2 cup pasta water.
  2. 2. Melt butter in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion and mushrooms to pan; sauté 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, and sauté 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt, shrimp, and carrot; sauté for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add pasta mixture, 1/2 cup pasta water, cream cheese, and pepper to pan; cook for 3 minutes or until cheese melts and shrimp are done, stirring occasionally.
