Giveaway: Frisch's Haddock & Chips + $25 Giveaway!

The folks at Frisch's are at it again!

This Lenten season they have a new fish offering - Haddock 'n Chips - and I was nearly drooling wanting to try it!

Yummy is definitely the first thing to come to mind. The meal comes with 2 crispy fried haddock strips and a basket of fries. I really enjoy Frisch's fries - because they're crispy but there are always some soft ones as well (kind of my favorite) - you don't want all crispy or all soft - they must use magic when they make them. ;-)

Why Should You Go? Frisch's also has their usual delicious fish sandwich as well as their awesome soup & salad bar. There are a great deal of non-meat options for those Fridays until Easter - or anytime! I really liked the Haddock and would definitely get it again!

Now - you can enter to win a $25 gift card to Frisch's for you and your family! Enjoy some fish on Frisch's!

Review: Nada - Downtown Cincinnati

The folks at LocalEats got in touch with me a while back and sent me a gift card to try out their service.

LocalEats offers one gift card that you can order online and it works at hundreds of restaurants nationwide. Their search is really easy to use - for Cincinnati the card works at Nada, Boca, Sotto and the Palm Court. The selection in each city isn't large - but it is nice that it has a variety of places. I could see giving this to someone who I wasn't sure what kind of food they liked - but wanted to send them someplace nice.

We chose Nada because Larry had never been! He's heard me brag about it - so decided to go. If you're not familiar - I refer to it as "fancy Mexican" and it's right next to the Aronoff in downtown Cincinnati.

We started with chips & guac - because I'm a bit of a guac addict. I was not prepared for what happened next. LARRY ATE GUACAMOLE AND LIKED IT. That has never ever happened. Ever. Their guac is a little more blended than I tend to like but the flavor is amazing. Anybody know what the big white "chips" they put in the bowl are? I always forget to ask.

The chips are great too - they're friend and flaky and yummy - very fresh. Always a treat.

We were there at brunch time - so the menu was a bit abbreviated. That said - we both went for tacos - I had the barbacoa because I'm addicted to short rib and Larry had chicken. I loved them and gobbled up every bite. Larry liked his as well - but I think he was still wanting more guacamole - and I can't fault him for that.

Why Should You Go? Nada had tacos before tacos were cool - and I appreciate that about them. While they've been around a while now - they're still high quality and outstanding service every time. Good stuff.

And thanks to Local Eats for providing us a gift card to try out their service - as well as Nada. The server did mention that he had to run the card as a MasterCard - so just mention that when you use it.

Review: Champps Americana - West Chester, OH

My friend Lou and I went out for dinner and a movie in West Chester and decided to eat at Champps. We were just trying to find plain "American" food - and that was the best option on the exit.

It's a fairly loud sports-oriented restaurant. They do have some fantastic leather recliners in the waiting area that I happily lounged in while we waited.

I ordered a pasta dish with a side salad - meh it was fine. I think the ranch was pretty good - you know I'm so picky about it. I hate the vinegary ones - I like one that you can tell is made with sour cream!

I went for the Lobster & Shrimp Campanelle which had spinach, spicy vodka cream sauce, parmesan and roasted red peppers. I liked this dish - but it was a bit skimpy on the ingredients - as you can see - very little shrimp, very little lobster, very little shrimp, very little roasted red pepper, very little sauce. What there was - tasted good - there just wasn't a lot other than the pasta.

Why Should You Go? Meh - I didn't love it. If you're going to watch a game - it's fine. The food was just so-so. It's not bad - it's not great. What do you think?

Recipe: Cheeseburger Pockets

Ground beef is one of those things that I take out the night before - and 9x out of 10 - I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. This week - I came across a great recipe that looked super super easy - would it actually taste good?

Start out with ground beef - I added a can of mushrooms - just because I like them...

Then on a cookie sheet  - lay out 5 biscuits - smush them a bit to make them larger. Then you top it with a spoonful of the ground beef mixture and then add some Land O'Lakes cheese (cuz it's DA BEST!).

After trying a few different things - smushing the biscuit on my hand seemed to be the best way to really get it big enough to cover the toppings.

Once you lay the other biscuit on top - edge it with a fork. I was a bit skeptical that it would actually seal - but here we go.

Ten minutes later - CHEESEBURGER POCKETS!

These were DELICIOUS! It's funny - I've been wanting to try empanadas lately - and think I basically just did without knowing it! I kept thinking of different things I could make as variations off this recipe. I know the first thing I will do on this one is throw a squirt of ketchup under the cheese - mmm!

This recipe was so tasty - I couldn't get over how much I liked them - and on the table in about 15-20 minutes - SOLD!

CHEESEBURGER POCKETS

Ingredients

1 can of Pillsbury Grands Butter Layer Flaky Biscuits (10 count)
2/3 pound ground beef (80/20)
1 small can mushrooms
4 slices Land O'Lakes American Cheese

Instructions

* Preheat the oven to 400
* Brown ground beef and mushrooms for 10 minutes and drain.
* Spray cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Flatten 5 biscuits a bit with your hand to make them a bit wider. Be careful not to pull on them as they may tear.
* Top each biscuit with the ground beef and then add cheese. (I broke it up into pieces to cover better.)
* Then, flatten the rest of your biscuits and place on top and seal the edges with a fork.
* Bake for 10 minutes until golden brown.

Thanks to Mommy Hates Cooking for sharing it.

Review: Riverside Korean - Covington, KY

Some friends and I decided to go to Riverside Korean for lunch a couple of weeks ago - Riverside holds such a special place for me - I'm approaching my ten year anniversary in Cincinnati and Riverside was the FIRST restaurant I went to in the city. Who knew that ten years later I would be publishing my 1000th blog post about them?!

Here's my Annabelle! I love this picture of her - she's so zen. At Riverside you can sit at conventional tables or sit on the floor. We chose conventional but Anne wanted to demonstrate the floor seating for all of you.

I think Anne got the Mae Un Sae Woo Bok Um - basically stir fried shrimp & veggies. She really enjoyed it - she wanted something light but wasn't too familiar with Korean food. She gave this two thumbs up!

They brought out these tiny bowls of things to add ranging from kimchee to daikon radish. The kimchee is definitely something to enjoy - the star though is the bottom middle. Those are potatoes! But they're super sweet! Like mapley boiled potatoes - I don't know what they are - other than DELICIOUS!

Matt & I got Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap - that's a big name for awesome stuff in a hot ass stone bowl. He got chicken (shown) and I got the traditional beef. They mix it for you at the table as well - so the egg gets all scrambled because it's so hot. The rice at the bottom gets all crispy because that stone bowl is so hot. Then you throw in some sriracha to spice it up!

This is a great introductory Korean dish and it's just damn tasty! If you haven't tried Korean - this is what to start with.

Why Should You Go? I love to try Bi Bim Bap at different places - my favorite is still Sunny Deli in the Carew Tower. But for the Dol Sot (hot stone bowl) - this is the place. Most people think it's the best Korean in the tri-state - so if you're wanting to try Korean - come here first.

Road Trip: Indianapolis Pt. 4 - City Market & Lucas Oil Stadium

I've been sharing little bits and pieces of our birthday trip to Indianapolis with you - hope you've enjoyed it and that you're interested in checking out the city yourself! Thanks again to the folks at VisitIndy.com for the trip!

For the last day - we had the attraction that was the original purpose for our trip!! But first - we stopped by City Market.

City Market was established in 1821 - wow! It's similar to Findlay Market but mainly consists of restaurants and food vendors. It's smaller but really nice. The building also reminded me a lot of the West Side Market in Cleveland - but again smaller.

Upstairs in the market is the Tomlinson Tap Room - it's a little hard to find if you're just googling and searching - but we finally figured it out. There's not much for ambiance but I'm sure when the whole place is bustling in the summer - it's pretty fun. They have a really wide selection of beers - a lot of local as well!

Larry is all about these dark beers now - it seems like yesterday he was drinking Bud Light. I'm so proud. :-)

Tomlinson Tap Room on Urbanspoon

But then - it was on to the MAIN ATTRACTION - LUCAS OIL STADIUM - THE HOME OF THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS!

We were staying across the street from the stadium so we had a front row seat all weekend - the anticipation was building. They do tours for $7 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And I can say - even if you're not a Colts fan - it's an IMPRESSIVE building. If you're a football fan - it's worth the price of admission.

Turned out - there was a couple from near my home in Iowa just passing through - they'd been in Cincinnati visiting their daughter. It was too funny to bump into Iowans in Indy!

When you walk in - there is a huge horseshoe stage. They said that for every home game they have a different LOCAL band playing on this stage before the game. How much fun is that!

We took a walk around the concourse as they were preparing for the NFL Combines. I'm a Broncos/Vikings fan - but man - it was exhilerating to walk around this place - it's massive! The big glass door at the end opens on nice days like a giant garage door (along with the roof).

And yes - we even got to go down to the field! Not ON the field but we were all happy with this view. It is so crazy to think of it full of screaming fans. I've been to games in the now-defunct Metrodome - but never on the field. Wow. He was a kid in a candy store...how could it get any better?

Um - oh yeah - sitting in the chairs of the Colts two amazing quarterbacks!!! I'm at Peyton Manning's locker and Larry is at Andrew Luck's. The tour guide said that he really only knew those two players lockers and that since Peyton left - nobody has used that locker. AWWWWWWWW.

It was really cool too - there were shades of Peyton throughout Lucas Oil - they haven't erased all traces of him. They know who buttered their bread.

I loved how EVERYWHERE we went - we saw Colts signage, billboards, paintings on the sides of buildings - everything - and it's not even football season. The town proclaims it's love for the Colts 365 days a year. It was an awesome trip.

Thanks again to the folks at VisitIndy.com for providing accommodations and attractions for the weekend. It's a birthday Larry won't soon forget. :-)

Recipe: Carlos O'Johnsons Queso Dip

Hi - my name is Food Hussy and I am a queso addict.

I'm fine admitting it - if there's queso on a menu - I have to get it. My absolute all-time favorite is from Carlos O'Kellys back home. I've been trying to find a copycat recipe that was just right. Today I have a couple to try...

I found a recipe that called for Velveeta, cream cheese, sour cream, sausage and Rotel (or generic) tomatoes. The full recipe can be found on Plain Chicken. This equal parts Velveeta & cream cheese and then half as much sour cream.

It was okay - but it wasn't "right" - it was too much cream cheese for me and too thick. I liked it but didn't love it.

What I did love were these chips!!! One of my readers sent me an email (Thanks Chrissy R!) after reading my review of Chuy's. She saw that I was craving these uber-thin chips like they had and told me I can get something just like that at Kroger! WHAAAAA?????

So thank you Chrissy - you have made my world better and I'll never buy another brand of tortilla chips again! Xochitl is the brand - it's not in the regular chip aisle - it's with the organic foods chip aisle. They're worth the extra 2 minutes to find them - trust me! (I need to squirt some lime on them next time!)

So I decided to try again with the left over Velveeta, sausage and tomatoes and I think I perfected it!!! Now - the Carlos O'Kellys version does NOT have sausage - I had it leftover so I wanted to throw it in. Good add!!!

This version was lighter and cheesier and just all around better - so woohoo for me! Perfecto!

Carlos O'Johnson Queso Dip

Ingredients:

1/4 lb chorizo
1/3 cup onion, diced
8 oz Velveeta, cubed
4 oz cream cheese, cubed
1 small can Rotel mild tomatoes

Directions:

* Saute chorizo and onion in skillet on medium and break sausage into very small pieces. If using links with casing - cut open casing and just saute sausage from inside. Once browned, drain on paper towel.
* In microwave safe bowl combine Velveeta and cream cheese - microwave 45 seconds at a time - stirring each time. Microwave until all chunks are melted through. You might mush them against the side of the bowl to help them along.
* Stir in the tomatoes and browned chorizo and onion. Mix well and microwave 30 more seconds.
* Serve!

It's really all up to you and your taste buds but for me - this ratio of 2:1 Velveeta:Cream Cheese was right for me. I just happened to be out of sour cream when I made it the 2nd time around and that was fine - it was better without it. I'll take simple anytime!

Enjoy!

Giveaway: Potbelly comes to Northgate!

Potbelly Sandwich Shop has recently opened up on Colerain near Northgate Mall! If you haven't been in a while - that area is REALLY booming! It's pretty great seeing all the development - I hear there might even be a movie theater coming soon!

Potbelly is one of many "sandwich shop" chains - and admittedly - I wasn't really a huge fan. My friend Kelly told me to try their chicken salad...so now was my chance!

One thing I notice is that they have Coke AND Pepsi - way to please the masses - I like that!

There's a giant menu board hanging up for you to peruse while you're in line. They have a lot of great choices and they have Skinnys that are all under 400 calories.

After I chose my sandwich - I decided to grab a bag of chips as well - it was cool to see the varieties beyond just plain old sour cream & onion or plain.

I had never had Pop Chips before and these sweet potato ones were really good. They're baked and actually tasty! There's a decent amount of seasoning on them as well - but I liked them.

So what is this secret sandwich that's delicious and that I had to try?

Chicken salad!!! Yeah - who knew - but Kelly promised me if I tried the chicken salad I would like it. And she was right! I like a "plain" chicken salad with mayo, celery, onion, chicken and that's what this is. I added provolone, lettuce & mayo on white and we were good to go. Good sandwich. Happy Hussy.

Potbelly also delivers - which is great. I ordered 2 sandwiches the other day and they even delivered that a few blocks over to our office. So keep that in mind next time you're stuck at your desk with meetings and piles of work. :-)

And thanks to the opening of their Northgate location - the great folks at Potbelly provided me with 3 $25 gift cards to give away to you guys! So you've got a great chance to win! Check out their menu and let me know what you like - and you might get to try it for free!

Why Should You Go? I like that they have hot sandwiches - even the chicken salad gets toasted a little. Good stuff. There's a good variety of drinks and chips - plus their cookies are legendary!
