Pinterest Fun – DIY Laundry Soap

February 4, 2013 · FoodHussy · 1 Comment

I’ve been having a blast with Pinterest as of late – finding things to do around the house as well as DIY things to save money…next up on my list was laundry soap. The recipe is all over Pinterest and seemed pretty easy to make –

2 cups Borax, 2 cups Washing Soda and one bar of laundry bar soap (2 brands: zote and fels-naptha). All the supplies for months worth of laundry soap – sure better than $12 for the big orange bottle I’ve loved for so long.

There are two brands of this soap – it’s less than $2/bar  – most suggested a food processor. Unfortunately I don’t have one, so I used a cheese grater. It was a snap – it’s a little harder than cheddar so it’s the perfect texture for grating. Some of the recipes mentioned there wasn’t any smell – but this has a great citrus-y smell that transfers to the laundry.

So there you have it – mix it all together and use 1-2 Tablespoons in your wash. If you use a front loader – it goes IN the machine with your clothes. The clothes have been clean and fresh-smelling! A friend did mention that it might be harder on clothes – so if you have some delicates or things you are super-careful with – you might want to keep some of the expensive stuff on hand. I haven’t noticed anything myself though – so I’m good with it.

The total cost of these 3 items (I did buy 2 bars of the Fels) was about $11. I didn’t even use 1/2 of either big box. So only using 1-2 Tbsp per load – this is going to last quite a while!

And the bonus is that these same ingredients make DIY Dishwasher Detergent!!
