Restaurant Review: Senate – Blue Ash

A friend of mine was interviewing in the area and had time to meet up for lunch after so we had to decide between hot dogs and Mexican. On this day, hot dogs won out.
Senate has much more than just hot dogs nowadays but it’s really what they’re known for and what put them on the Cincinnati food scene. The duck fat fries were also one of their first popular items.
Poutine
Another friend came along as well and she ordered the Poutine from the starters as her main entree – which obviously it’s large enough for! She said it was good but not great – it just seemed to be missing something. I just met her that day – so didn’t feel like I should just try her food – even though short ribs are my weakness. It looked beautiful though.
Mexico City
Rachel went for the Mexico City – she saw guacamole and went for it. Because of the priciness of the dogs and we knew they were big – we both skipped the fries and just had the dog.
Rachel really liked this hot dog and I have to say – I was a bit jealous – it looked amazing! It’s definitely a hot dog you cut up to eat.
Trailer Park
I went for the Trailer Park – which is what my husband ordered on my first trip to the OTR location years ago. It’s a great hot dog and a good bun. The coleslaw overwhelmed the dog a bit and was very creamy. The Grippos were a great addition to the dog with that added crunch. You completely lose the cheese with all the coleslaw.
Why Should You Go? It’s definitely fun and the dog combinations are impressive. They’re served in metal pans the water is brought to the table in antique-like bottles. I have never loved my meal but I’m guessing I haven’t found the one thing I love yet. It’s a bit pricey so I don’t know that I’ll be back but if you haven’t tried it – it’s worth a try.
