These Cheesy Garlic Sausage Balls are great for a get-together or any easy dinner night and you can bake or air fry them! And if you love Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuits – you’ll love these even more!

I attempted sausage balls years ago for New Years Eve and they were ok – but not great – I had to redeem myself! The other thing I love about these is the versatility – they’re good on their own, in a sandwich (like a meatball sub!) or even broken up on a salad!

What are Sausage Balls?

Um – sausage balls are little nuggets of deliciousness? OK – you want more than that? Sausage Balls are sort of like a hushpuppy but with meat and cheese thrown in.

You may not see the cheese but I promise it’s there. A lot of recipes for sausage balls use Bisquick – these have a fun starter ingredient – Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix! That gets a ton of flavor in one ingredient – and yet you’re making a whole new dish!

Can sausage balls be made ahead? Can sausage balls be frozen?

Yes! There’s nothing in here that won’t be fine if you put them together ahead of time. I found when working with the “dough” – it was really messy – I think refrigerating after mixing would help that and make it a little easier to work with.

For freezing – I would lay the balls out on a cookie sheet with parchment first and freeze them for a couple of hours – to make sure they’re solid. Then you can pop them off and throw them in a freezer bag.

Can these Red Lobster Cheesy Garlic sausage balls be served at room temperature?

You can do anything you want – but I wouldn’t. No reason other than the taste – they taste better hot.

What kind of dip do you serve with sausage balls?

I’m a sucker for honey mustard – but I’m also super picky. My favorite is O’Charley’s – it’s very light and bright yellow and I figured it out! I got some spicy honey mustard from my friend’s at Woebers and I really like it – but it needed SOMETHING! And I thought about the O’Charley’s honey mustard that I love and realized it was lighter and creamier. Solution? Add mayo!

So for the perfect honey mustard – mix equal parts honey mustard and mayo and stir! Now I make it all the time! It’s perfect!

Can you air fry sausage balls?

Yes! I made half the batch in the oven and half in the air fryer. (I got a new Paula Deen 9.5 quart air fryer – omg – so amazing!!) There really was no difference in the cooking – the air fryer ones browned a little more and were done quicker – but the taste was the same. So easy!

What to serve with Red Lobster Sausage Balls?

You can serve these on their own as an appetizer – but serving them on top of a salad or even as an entree is great too! Here are some fun side dishes for them:
Tom + Chee Grilled Cheese Salad (use the sausage balls instead of the grilled cheese)

  1. You have sausage listed twice on the ingredients list but worded differently…
It is just one pound of sausage, correct?
