Air Fryer Plantains (Tostones & Guacamole!)

I’ve had plantains at restaurants many times – they deep fry them and call them tostones. So I made my own at home in my air fryer – along with a 2 minute guacamole!
I also remember the FIRST time I had plantains. My high school boyfriend was from Ecuador and, later in life, I went to his parents house in Chicago and they made me a traditional Ecuadorian meal. They made plantain chips in a deep fryer and wow – they were awesome. So this is my version of fried plantains but made in an air fryer!

Here’s the funny thing – Plantains are from the banana family – and I HATE bananas – but I like plantain chips likes this. Plantains are starchier and lower in sugar than bananas and also not as mushy. (it’s a texture thing – love banana flavor but you cannot pay me to eat a banana!!!).

How do you make air fryer plantain chips?

Plantain chips in the air fryer are easy peasy. First – you slice your plantain into thick 1/2″ to 3/4″ slices and pop them in a single layer in the air fryer. Fry them for 5-6 minutes – then take them out and smash them! I used the bottom of a glass so it was an even smush and then put them back in the air fryer for another 6 minutes.

I also used Sazon Tropical seasoning on them – it’s zesty and delicious – a favorite of mine!

How do you make a quick guacamole?

I like life hacks and this guacamole is one for sure. I had pico de gallo and a bunch of avocados – so guess what – I had guac! I mashed up a ripe avocado and added pico, lime juice, olive oil and coarse sea salt. Mash it all together and you’ve got a 2 minute guacamole! This is a perfect dip/topping for air fryer plantain chips!

My air fryer is used almost daily and I’ve got lots of great vegetable side dishes that you can make in it. My favorite are these Jalapeno Cheddar Avocado Fries – spicy and delicious! Air fryer zucchini fries are great too – so crispy! I even made stuffed mushrooms in the air fryer – juicy and cheesy yum!
