Extreme Country Boy Spicy Snack Mix

I have an Extreme Country Boy in my life and he loves to take a normal recipe and “country boy” it up! This is a snack mix his boss on the farm used to make for all the guys – then my boy had to kick it up with even spicier seasoning! I packaged it up for holiday gifts but it’s good all year round! Spicy, sweet and crunchy!

ingredients:

• Amazon Snack Mix Shopping List
• 1 cup honey roasted peanuts
• 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
• 1 cup sesame sticks
• 2 cups peanut butter Chex cereal
• 1/2 cup pistachios
• 3/4 cup wasabi peas
• 1 stick butter
• 2 Tablespoon chili powder
• 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 2 Tablespoon hot sauce
• 1 teaspoongarlic powder
• 1/2 cup peanut butter m&ms
• 1/2 chocolate covered cashews – chopped into smaller pieces

instructions:

How to cook Extreme Country Boy Spicy Snack Mix

1. In large bowl mix together peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame sticks, Chex, pistachios and wasabi peas. 
2. In microwave safe bowl (or tall drinking glass), place one stick buttter, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and garlic powder. Take parchment from butter stick and place on top of glass. Microwave for 1 minute or until butter melts. 
3. Stir melted butter to mix all spices together
4. Toss spiced butter with cereal mix to coat all pieces. 
5. Now it’s time to bake the spices in! 
6.     Air fryer Directions: Heat at 300 for 15 minutes and stir half way through. You’ll want to do this much mix in two batches. 
7.     Oven Directions: Place on cookie sheet. Bake at 300 for 30 minutes and stir half way.
8. After the mix is baked, you can add the peanut butter M&Ms and the chocolate covered cashew pieces. 
9. Store in mason jars or mason jar ziploc bags!

The thing is, no craft day is complete without DESSERT!!! To be honest, the desserts are more important than the craft most days. So I decided to stop by Frisch’s Big Boy and grab all of their holiday desserts and bring them with me! 


I grabbed a famous Frisch’s Pumpkin Pie, their Pumpkin Cheesecake and – of course – their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Caramel Cake!! 

What spices can you use to make your house smell good?

So I went ultra simple with this fall potpourri: cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves plus cranberries and oranges – that’s it. And really – you’re good with just those. You can always sprinkle more spices in – but these are so good on their own. 


My big tip here is to buy in bulk online (all my links are in the recipe below)!!! We always do craft day on a tight budget and I was able to get these spices all in bulk for $5-7 on Amazon! Another great place to check are those Amish stores that sell things in bulk. Definitely do NOT buy spice jar type spices for these! And you’ll never need to buy cloves or nutmegs again! hahahahaha 

These simmer scents for fall and winter are like a liquid potpourri! And it’s so easy to gift or use at your own home! If you just want to use it for potpourri – just put a big pot of water on the stove or in your crockpot and add all the ingredients (slice the orange). If you want to drink it, use water & apple juice instead of just water! Simmer and you’re good! As the water evaporates, just add more. I had this pot going for 6-8 hours! 

So we let the first potpourri simmer for a while just to make sure we liked the smell – and while we did that – it was dessert time! Frisch’s Pumpkin Pie is famous around Cincinnati. It’s creamy and has that punch of spice and pumpkin – it’s so good! They make them around the clock right before Thanksgiving because the demand is so high!  

In addition to the pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice cake, they also have a Pumpkin Cheesecake! It’s so creamy – it’s like a lighter pumpkin pie with a light coating of whipped cream on top. The crust is sweet but not too much! We loved it! 

These simmer pot recipes for fall and winter will give you a fragrant home that lasts all day! And the thing is – everybody wants their home to smell nice! This is such a fun and cute gift idea and it goes together in minutes!!! You can have a few bags ready to go – then as the holiday season moves along – grab and give!

Gift Idea: Holiday Simmer Pot

There’s nothing I love more than spending a cozy day at home watching Hallmark movies in a house that just smells of the holidays! This gift bag is the perfect way to pass that long to friends. Pop a few ingredients in a bag, tie it with a bow and you’re done! It’s the perfect gift for friends, neighbors and party hosts!

ingredients:

• 1 bag of fresh cranberries
• 12 cinnamon sticks
• 12 whole nutmegs
• 6 oranges 
• 12 tablespoons whole cloves
• 6 cellophane gift bags
• 1 roll holiday ribbon

How to cook Gift Idea: Holiday Simmer Pot

Gift Bags

1. Spread open cellophane bags
2. In each bag place: 

• – 1/2 cup cranberries
• –  2 cinnamon sticks
• – 2 whole nutmegs
• – 1 orange
• – 2 Tbsp whole cloves

1. Tie bag with ribbon 

Instructions

1. – Place large pot of water on stove – turn on high (or use a crock pot!) 
2. – Slice orange into wedges or slices and place into water along with cranberries, cloves, cinnamon sticks 
3. – Feel free to use micro-grater to grate some of nutmeg into water – then add rest of whole nutmegs to water
4. – Simmer 
5. – As water reduces, just add more! It can simmer all day!  
6. – If you swap water for apple juice, it becomes a hot cider you can serve to your guests! 

NOTES:

– You can substitute ground nutmeg and ground cinnamon
– Buy the nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon in bulk online or even at an Amish store – SO MUCH CHEAPER!!!!
– If you want to be more creative – print up little note cards with the simmer instructions and include as gift tags
– If you use apple juice instead of water – you can drink this!

How do you make homemade dog treats with rolled oats?

Dog treats are pretty easy – they’re basically cookies without the sugar – which also means you could eat them – but you won’t like them. We mixed together pumpkin, peanut butter and chicken broth – then added eggs, whole wheat flower, baking powder and rolled oats. I would recommend using your “big mixer” if you have one – it gets pretty tough to stir once you add the flour and the mixer manhandled it. 

How long do homemade dog treats last? 

They’ll last about a week – I did not refrigerate them. I think they might last a little longer if I had. I gave my pups 1-2 a day. They LOVED them!!! And so did Dani’s dog Utah…

Utah was very eager for the treats the day we were making them!!!

Pumpkin Dog Treats

Yield: approx 40 cookies

Get the dogs in the pumpkin spirit and make dog treats for them! If you have friends with dogs – you can give some to them too! These dog treats so tasty – to the dogs anyway. We even mixed up a little puppy frosting to top them with and they are DOG-APPROVED!

ingredients:

Pup Treats

• 1 15 oz can pumpkin 
• 1 cup peanut butter 
• 1/2 cup chicken broth 
• 2 large eggs
• 5 cups whole wheat flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 1 cup rolled or quick-cooking oats

Puppy Frosting

• 1/2 cup cream cheese
• 1/2 cup peanut butter 

instructions:

How to cook Pumpkin Dog Treats

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Spray two cookie sheets with nonstick spray or line with parchment paper. 
2. In mixer, combine pumpkin, peanut butter, broth and egg. 
3. Add 2 cups of flour and baking powder. Use a rubber spatula to clean down the sides of bowl. 
4. Add in oats and continue to mix.
5. Continue to add flour 1/4 cup at a time until dough is no longer sticky. 
6. Sprinkle flour onto silpat or counter. Turn dough on to flour and use a rolling pin to roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create shaped cookies. Re-roll scraps until all of the dough has been used.
7. Place cookies on baking sheets. Bake for 12 minutes (depending on size,) then flip cookies. Bake for an additional 12 minutes, adding more time for crunchier cookies.
8. While baking, mix together peanut butter and cream cheese. You might need to microwave for 15 seconds to soften. 
9. Remove from oven and drizzle with frosting if you want. I put the frosting in a baggie and cut off the corner to pipe the frosting and then spread it with a knife.  
10. Cool the cookies completely before giving to the pups. 

NOTES:

Store treats in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

AR Workshop is a national company with locations around the US and the Cincinnati location is located right off Hyde Park Square next to US Bank. They offer DIY classes, parties and retail.

The classes are a lot of painted sign classes but also have pillow cases, wall hangings, boxes, framed art and more. I would love to do every class they have!!!!

They also have a bunch of holiday-themed signs! Seriously – these things are adorable!!! These would make great gifts for folks that love holiday decorating or for yourself. The quality is impeccable!

So how does it work?

First you check out their calendar and figure out which project you want to make. From there – you’ll choose which specific item you want to make. Nearly every item is personalized – so you when you purchase your class online – you tell them the personalization that you want. It was really easy.

Then you show up and get crafting!!!! Be aware – street parking is premium right there – so show up early or prepare to walk a block or so. I know a lot of folks were parking in US Bank parking lot after hours – (I’m not telling you to do that or not! Park at your own risk.)

I had really liked the canvas wall hanging – and it seemed like something I wouldn’t really be able to do very easily on my own. I’m pretty crafty – so I figure if it’s a class that I would normally pay for – I should do something I can’t do on my own.

Once you get there – they have the projects all laid out at the tables. If you’re signing up with friends – you can note that in your registration so you get seated together. From there – I was able to pick out the stain I wanted (since I was doing the canvas wall hanging) from the choices you see on the left. Then they gave us some keyrings of wood samples with the paint colors on them so we could choose from those.

I am so indecisive and always need help! Plus – I saw this really cool finished project that had hombre text and loved it! The staff at AR Workshop was so helpful – they consulted with me and helped me choose colors for the different parts of the wall hanging and which part would look the best with that hombre effect! Very helpful!

From there – we got to work. The folks at AR Workshop print out your personalized design on this blue sticky sheet. Then each person goes through and pulls up the pieces that will need to be painted. We then stick the blue sheet to our fabric (I did the wall hanging, my friend did pillows). After that we tape over the areas to make sure they’re stuck really well. The whole goal here is to make sure that it’s down on the fabric as tightly as possible to keep paint from seeping under. We then painted our areas and while that dried – I stained the wood.

While it dried – I also walked around to see some of the other projects – you can really see them coming to life! They’re super cute!

Here’s a particular one that caught my eye – I’m not really a holiday decorator. We don’t have a lot of space to store things out of season – so I just keep the holiday stuff to a minimum.

Here are some other finished projects. The one on the left is one a girl at my table did. This was her second time with AR and I have to say – I was IMPRESSED! You’ll notice how PERFECT her lines are! There was no paint that seeped under the design – every letter is perfection! All hail the friend of the Satchell family that made this pillow!

Mine is on the right – and you can see – I kind of had some bleeding spots. The workshop leaders said that wood is more forgiving than canvas – but she had a trick for me too! She brought over some paint that is the color of canvas and I touched up most of the spots that bled. Now is it perfect like the one on the left? No. But when you hang it up and just walk by it – IT’S FINE!!! I think I just didn’t know what I was doing as much and didn’t take the time I should have.

My advice is to take your time – really focus on getting the blue flat and stuck to your surface. The better that is – the better your project will turn out.

Am I still happy with my imperfect wall hanging? Hell yeah! I love it!!!!

After my hanging was done – she helped me put the wood pieces on so it could hang. We had a staple gun issue so she went to her workshop and grabbed a nail gun and voila – it worked! I like that even when something went wrong – I had multiple staff members there to help me out. That’s impressive knowing that the class was FULL. Everybody got personalized care.

So here I am with my final wall hanging. She said I could take an iron to this once everything was fully dry to flatten out some of those puckers.

The funny thing is – I didn’t realize until after I had already painted everything on – those were our wedding colors! I was having such a hard time deciding and then I gravitated towards that light/bright blue (like my sweater) and the hot pink – and then it hit me – those were our colors! Awwww.

My friend Erin did state pillows – one for her and one for her hubby – they turned out fantastic!!!! I mean I think an Iowa pillow would be much better – but I can’t fault them for where they were born! 😉 They also had dog pillows that I was DYING to do – I could have one for each dog! They were so cute!!! But alas – that will have to wait until I visit another day.

All in all – we loved AR Workshop and think that – while a little pricey – it’s super fun. (1 pillow is $45, 2 pillows $65 and the wall hanging is $60.) The quality of the finished product is excellent and I think that’s the thing – if you are wanting to do something like this and you want to be sure it’s done right and worthy of being hung in your home (or that of a loved one) – it’s worth every penny. They consulted with me, helped me at every step along the way and that made a lot of difference!

Their classes before the end of the year are filling up quick – she told me that most of the classes are full by the time they happen – so I would say – take a look at the schedule and book it out in advance. You can also bring wine and snacks if like to enjoy while you’re working. It was a really fun night for Erin and I to hang out – it’s much more fun with a friend for sure. Plus – you can help each other out while you’re working on the project.

Here’s a taste of the finished product with some Dollar Tree (where everything is actually $1!) fake flowers. Doesn’t it look adorable?!

The list of supplies is super easy:

* Mason Jars ($1)
* Fat Quarters ($12 for a huge bunch)
* Mod Podge
* Scissors
* Paper Plates
* Foam Paint Brush
* Skinny Paint Brush (not foam)

I found the fat quarters at a local quilt store – after looking all over for small flowers – I went to settle with something I didn’t love and there on the counter waiting for me was a batch of the flower-printed fat quarters! I have a lot of fabric left over – we got at least 2 jars out of 1 fat quarter – so if you have fabric laying around – you’re good there.

I had a jar of Mod Podge that I thought was jacked because it was so thick so I asked for something to stir it with. Since we were sitting on the deck – she grabbed a stick for me. A stick.

First you line up the jar with your fabric. You want the fabric to be just a little taller than the jar…Cut one straight cut all the way across your fabric.

Then cut your fabric into 1″ strips – we found that was the best width – wider was too much to handle in the next step and narrower was just annoying. I would recommend if you’re doing more than one jar – cut your strips all at once because the Mod Podge gets MESSY. You probably need 15-20 for a pint jar.

Take the strip once you’ve coated it in and place it in the jar – you want to have one end of the strip in the middle of the bottom of your jar. We found it easiest to use a regular skinny paint brush for this step. Once the strip is touching the bottom – use the brush to stick the strip to the jar and brush out any air bubbles.

We each did three jars and they turned out fantastic – we all thought this might have been our most successful and useful craft day ever! Let them dry at least overnight and then trim the tops.

The fabric I found was literally perfect for what I wanted! I really want to do more of them – they’re so cute! So now – what to do with them?

I stopped at Dollar Tree and got fake flowers in complementary colors – and then took them outside to see how pretty they looked!

 We decided to do a dollar store craft and chose to knockoff a mirror we saw at Anthropologie. Danielle really loved the mirror and we could get the supplies super cheap – so it was a go!

Here’s the original mirror for $49.95 on Anthropologie’s website and our finished project! Ours was around $4! I’ll take that any day!

Step 1: First we started with a mirror. Dollar Tree is the key – they are the Dollar Store where everything is actually $1. These were the only small-ish mirrors they had and $1 each was good for me.

 Step 2: Tape off the mirror. We just used painters tape and paper but this step is very key!! I tucked the paper under the frame as much as possible and taped it down as tightly as possible. Danielle tried to do this quickly and hers didn’t stay down when we painted – so it’s really important that you get this taped off well.

Step 3: Pick Your Flowers! I got a variety from Dollar Tree – each bunch was $1 and there were a lot of flowers on each “strand” so I spent about $2 per person on flowers. These plastic ones were great – you can just pluck them off the plastic stems and then hot glue them to the mirror.

Step 4: Spray Paint! I got a couple of fun colors (glitter & Tiffany blue) and the other girls had some. This I could not get at the Dollar Store but I got them at Meijer for as little as 99 cents/can.

We all chose different flowers and patterns for our mirrors. The balls were very popular. It was nice that the leaves had texture – it would lend itself well to the paint.

We were not shy with the glue – load it up to get the flowers to stick to each other and the mirror. We had a couple of glue guns going for the three of us.

More glue – these little pink stick flowers were unique and we all liked them but had a hard time figuring out how to use them. I stuck mine on a corner and liked it.

Here’s my finished project – I had them only on the top in case I wanted to set this on a counter rather than hang it.

Once we all had our flowers on the mirrors and the glue was dry – we took them outside and it was painting time!

I brought a box I had leftover from moving and we went in Dani’s garage (it was COLD outside!!). You’re supposed to be above 50 degrees but we did it anyway. Dani brought out a space heater for us to heat up with.

A few tricks to the painting – you’re going to need to hold it up to get in between the flowers. You might plan in advance for a hook on the back mirror hanger or at least something to prop it up with. Also – wear rubber gloves. Rachel didn’t and got some spray paint on her wedding ring! Eek! (Olive Oil & Sugar removed it!)

We also noticed that the paint ate away the little balls that we chose. So some of them are only half there. Not a huge deal depending on how OCD you are. I was fine with it but did go over it a couple more times to make sure I got paint in all the crevices between the flowers.

Here’s a quick selfie of us in the garage – oh how cold it was! We kept huddling around the space heater and holding it on the mirrors and then on us.

Our first couple of coats were in the Tiffany blue color. I wanted a little something more (of course!).  The glitter spray paint can was defective but I was able to shake a few sprays out of it over top of the blue. This added a little something fun I think!

After they were painted – we had to let them dry overnight so the paint wasn’t tacky.

The next day I peeled off the paint and paper and took my first pic in the mirror. This is what my friends and I have dubbed #hussyface. I do it all the time! Maybe if I become famous – it’ll become a real thing. 🙂

Here’s a close up on the flowers – I think they look pretty good! We have this in our 2nd bathroom. It’s always good to have extra mirrors around the house.

All in all it was a really fun DIY craft! We all had a great time and the projects turned out great! All in all it was about $4/mirror vs. $49! Not bad at all!

For the paint – you start with white and whatever other color you like. I made the variations of color all on the plate but then we realized you could just start with a blob of white and then add in a couple drops of color each time. Either way works – just so you go from white to color in a slow manner.

Here’s the best part – the paint is 50 cents at Walmart, the foam brushes are $2 for a big bag and the vase was $1 at Dollar Tree. I have to say – I went to every dollar store and Dollar Tree has the best selection and quality for craft type of generic items. So if you’re going on a hunt for something – go there first.

All in all – this costs less than $2. Nice!!!

The foam brushes that are about an inch wide are perfect – you just make a couple of swipes the width of the brush around the top of the vase. You don’t need to let it dry all the way – but wait maybe a minute between colors.

Then you take the next color and go down about half way on the first swipe – and paint a swipe all the way around. You just keep going like that – overlapping a bit each time. You see a lot of brush marks in mine – but once it’s all done – they aren’t near as obvious.

And then you go all the way to the bottom where you have a solid color. This was super simple – it maybe took an hour and that was with all of our gabbing and eating cobbler. These vases were a great size because as you got lower on the vase – you could just stick your hand inside to hold it so you weren’t touching the paint. By the time you get to the bottom – the top should be dry – so you can set it upside down if you want to let it finish drying.

These are the finished vases – you can really make them your own – with more distinct color changes or more muted. Danielle – always the rebel – decided to start with the color at the top. And when I say  “decided” – I really mean – accidentally. But hers looks great too!

And here she is…creepin on my shot. It’s always something with her! Luckily she makes a mean cobbler – so I think we’ll keep her. 😉

After the vases dried – I took my Glitter Mod Podge and put a top coat on the paint. I figure this will keep the vases from chipping a little and gives them a little shimmer – so cute!

You start with coasters – I found this idea on the interwebs and they used tile coasters – but Hobby Lobby only had cork. I also bought felt – more needed when you use tile – but hey – my husband is a Colts fan – so he loves anything blue. 🙂

I love the designs on these – I just wished I had saved his six packs for the past 3 years! I’d have gift coasters for decades!

The Mod Podge is a process but not too bad:

1. Apply Mod Podge to the coaster and then stick the felt to the coaster.
2. Apply Mod Podge to the back of the six pack and then stick to the other side of the coaster.

Once those are dry and stuck on pretty good – then you cover the top of the six pack graphic in a coat of Mod Podge. Mine went on a little thick so I only did one coat. If yours is runnier – you might do a couple of coats.

The last step is to coat with the Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer. They suggest using that outside. I covered a cookie sheet with foil and then put the coasters on it. It was wet outside and I had to let it dry between coats. I kept in my breezeway until it was fully dry.

The supplies are minimal – bells, ribbon, thread and keyrings. I threaded the bells onto the key rings. (Hint: don’t buy the key rings in the jewelry section – they’re more expensive – hunt around the kids area – or just look around your house!)

I didn’t quite follow directions and bought ribbon that was wider than 1″ – but it was so pretty. I found out later that the wider ribbon didn’t fit on the door knob as well. So – hindsight – buy the 1″ ribbon. 🙂

Our niece was staying with us at the time and said she could sew – so off she went. You sew a few loops into the ribbon and then put the key rings on the loops (full instructions below).

These dog treats were super simple – a little messy – but the dogs loved them! I came across this recipe from PrettyFluffy.com.

Poor Mysty – she always looks like the saddest, most-abused dog on the planet. And by abused – I mean overfed.

Once they set up – I rolled them in coconut. I don’t own a food processor so my coconut wasn’t “finely shredded” – it also didn’t stick incredibly well. So if you have a little food processor – chop it a little.

I keep these treats refrigerated after making. They just get too mushy when left out. These are also people friendly and they tasted pretty good! haha
