What You Will ❤️ About Chicken Cordon Bleu
It’s no secret that I’m air fryer obsessed – but this is exactly why! There’s no added fat or oil – and all you taste are the delicious flavors of the ham, chicken, cheese and dijon mustard! They meld together in this amazing melty deliciousness your whole family will love!
What is chicken cordon bleu?
Chicken Cordon Bleu actually has nothing to do with bleu cheese! Cordon bleu is French for blue ribbon! So this is a Blue Ribbon Chicken recipe! Cordon Bleu is a dish of meat wrapped around cheese then breaded and fried – so much potential with that!
Ingredients for Chicken Cordon Bleu?
The main ingredients are chicken, ham, Swiss cheese and Dijon mustard. Here’s everything you’ll need for this simple recipe:
- boneless skinless chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken breasts
- thin slices of ham – you can use deli ham
- thin slices of cheese – Swiss cheese is traditional and my fav is Baby Swiss
- dijon mustard
- egg
- panko breadcrumbs
- freshly grated Parmesan cheese

How to cook chicken cordon bleu in an air fryer?
This is a simple recipe – but it looks very fancy – so you’ll impress the family with this one for sure! There’s no flour in this version and no frying in oil!
- On a cutting board, lay out chicken tenders and lay a piece of parchment (or a piece of plastic wrap) on top of tender, one at a time, using flat side of meat mallet / tenderizer – pound chicken lightly to flatten to make 4 flattened chicken slices (serve 2 per person)
- If using chicken breast – using a sharp knife – slice each breast into two pieces lengthwise and proceed as noted here
- Don’t have a meat mallet? You can beat with a rolling pin as well!
- Spread 1 tsp dijon mustard on top of the chicken
- Lay one slice ham and one slice cheese on top of mustard
- Set up breading trays:
- Tray 1: beaten egg
- Tray 2: mix together panko bread crumbs and parmesan
- Feel free to add a pinch of salt & pepper if you like.
- Tightly roll your chicken tender/ham/cheese and hold it tight!
- Dredge rolled chicken in egg wash and then move rolled chicken to panko mixture. Roll to coat entirely and pat down mixture onto chicken. Give the roll a little squeeze and it should hold together. No need for a toothpick unless it’s not holding together
- Set rolls in a single layer in air fryer basket and spritz with olive oil spray.
- Air fry at 350º for 14 minutes.
- Using an instant-read thermometer, check the internal temperature of the chicken to be sure it is at 165º
- Remove from air fryer basket with tongs and serve with a side salad.

This recipe was made using the Paula Deen Air Fryer.
Tips, Tricks & FAQs
I cooked this at 350º for 30 minutes.
I always recommend same temp as the oven directions but half the time. Start there – then you can add time if it’s still not warm. But you can’t unburn something!
Store leftovers in an airtight container (I like these glass ones) in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can freeze up to three months. Reheat in the air fryer for 4-5 minutes or in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
Variations for Chicken Cordon Bleu
Chicken Cordon Bleu is a very classic dish – but it doesn’t mean you can’t jazz it up or change it! Here are some ideas to tweak your air fryer chicken cordon bleu recipe:
- Mustard – I love Dijon because it has a bite but is still creamy. But swap with horseradish mustard for more bite – or honey mustard for a little sweetness!
- Cheese – classically, this is made with Swiss – but you could use Jarlsberg for an alternative to Swiss – or if you like a stronger bite – try a thin slice of sharp Cheddar. Want something more mild? Go with mozzarella or provolone!
- Ham – get a little fancy and swap the ham for Canadian Bacon or prosciutto!
- Pork Chop – get crazy and use a boneless pork chop! Pound thin and wrap just like you would a chicken breast.
