What You Will ❤️ About Chicken Divan
- Old School – This is an old school casserole that I updated to make in the crock pot!
- Comfort Food – No other way to describe this than to say it’s a comfort food – creamy sauce over shredded chicken with some broccoli to say it’s healthy! 😉
- Easy – Nothing easier and it can be made in just a couple of hours!

Ingredients for Chicken Broccoli Divan
Chicken Divan is an old school casserole dish that our grandparents made – but you can bring it up to date by making it in your slow cooker! Here’s what you need:
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts – you could also add in chicken thighs. I wouldn’t use rotisserie chicken as it will get rubbery in the crock pot.
- Cream of chicken soup – you can swap any of the cream soup – i was going to add in a cream of broccoli but couldn’t find it so just doubled up on the chicken (cream of mushroom soup would be fine too). I would advise LOW SODIUM as the dish did come out a bit salty (with none added).
- Mayonnaise – I always use Duke’s Mayo – you could also use sour cream if you you’re not a mayo fan
- Lemon juice – fresh is always better but jarred is fine
- Dijon mustard – I’m a Grey Poupon snob – the commercials got in my head
- Broccoli florets – load up on the fresh broccoli!!! You could also use frozen if you like.
- Sharp cheddar cheese – you could go with any cheddar but I think sharp really stands out since you’re not using a lot
- French fried onions – you could also use ritz crackers or panko breadcrumbs – just a little crunch on top!

This recipe was made using the Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker.

Recipe Variations
This chicken divan recipe is a very classic dish that your grandma probably made from a church cookbook – but you can still make some tweaks to make it your own!
- More Veggies – cauliflower would be a great pairing or add mushrooms and onions!
- Pork Chops – boneless thick cut pork chops would be a good swap for the chicken breasts
- Bake It – you can also pop this all in at the same time into a casserole dish and bake it in the oven. Most oven recipes use pre-cooked chicken – so you could use a rotisserie chicken and then just bake for about 30 minutes. Cooking times will vary if you’re using raw vs. cooked chicken.
- Curry – another popular variation is to add a 1/2 tsp curry powder

How to make Crock Pot Chicken Divan
I love an easy chicken slow cooker recipe and this is definitely it. And you might think of slow cooker as an all day – but cooking on high – this only takes 3 hours. And you’ll have leftovers for the week!
- Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and place chicken breasts in bottom
- In a large bowl, mix together soups, mayonnaise, lemon juice and dijon mustard.
- Pour sauce mixture over chicken breasts and cook on high for 2-3 hours or low for 4-6 hours. I did high and the chicken was ready after about 2.5 hours to be shredded.
- After shredding chicken, add in broccoli florets and stir. Top with cheddar cheese. Place lid back on slow cooker and cook for 30 minutes.
- Sprinkle top with fried onions and fresh parsley to serve. Serve over rice or biscuits.

Tips, Tricks & FAQs
Store leftovers in an airtight container (I like these glass ones) in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can freeze up to three months. Reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.
Yes – you just need 1.5-2 lbs of chicken. In the world of giant chicken breasts – these two weighed in at just under 2 lbs! Chicken tenders will also cook a bit more quickly.
