Smoked Green Beans are heavenly! The best part is you can put it together in minutes and then pop it on your smoker! I added bacon, onion and my favorite BBQ rub just to make it even more delicious.

These Traeger Smoked Green Beans are also a copycat of the Texas Roadhouse Green Beans. They have a delicious smoky flavor and these definitely match up to that! It’s the layers of flavors that make them so decadent – with onions, bacon, BBQ Rub seasoning and even a touch of apple cider vinegar and finished with butter. How can they not be good?

What’s in Smoked Green Beans?

  • frozen green beans – I used 2 bags of whole green beans – but you could use canned or fresh as well
    • Using fresh? They will take a little longer and more water in the pan – I would start with 2.5 hours and see if they’re fork tender
    • Using canned? They will take less time – I would go for 1.5 hours and be sure to drain the beans.
  • diced bacon & onion – uncooked! Put it in raw – it cooks while it’s smoking
  • your favorite BBQ seasoning – I love Historic BBQ – they’re local and work great on anything
  • a touch of water & apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 stick butter because butter makes everything better

How do you make Smoked Green Beans?

  • Get your smoker ready! I use a Traeger pellet grill but you can use any type of smoker
  • While it’s heating up, toss green beans in a baking dish
  • Sprinkle diced onion and bacon on top of beans and stir
  • Sprinkle BBQ Rub all over beans
  • Add water and vinegar to dish
  • When smoker/Traeger is up to temp at 225 – place pan in smoker
  • Smoke at 225 for 2 hours – checking at 1 hour and stir
  • Raise temp to 400 on Traeger
  • Add butter slices to top of beans and add more seasoning if you’d like
  • Smoke for 30 minutes at 400 degrees

Tips, Tricks & FAQs

Can I make these if I don’t have a smoker?

Yes – you can make them in a crock pot or the oven. If you do in the crock pot – I would definitely cook the onion and bacon first. In the oven – you could put them in raw. Either way I would add a few dashes of Liquid Smoke to add that flavor and scent.

Can you use fresh green beans?

Yes – they’ll just need 30-60 minutes more in the smoker. Check them to your preferred doneness.

Can you use canned green beans?

Yup! They’ll need LESS time – by 30-60 minutes! They’ll be much softer – so they would be my last choice.

Do I need to cook the bacon and onions first?

Nope! When you kick the smoker up to 400- they’ll finish cooking and be just right! You can cook them a little if you’d like but do NOT cook them all the way through.

What kind of seasoning should I use if I don’t have a BBQ rub?

Salt, pepper, garlic – always works!

How would I make this on a regular grill.?
You just need wood chips. Soak them in water for 30 minutes before starting the grill. One cup of wood chips will last for about 20 minutes. Keep adding chips to the grill throughout the process.
If you use a charcoal grill, light the coals, when the coals are ready, place them on one side of the grill. Place some of the wood chips on top of the coals. Place your food on the side without the coals to cook it with indirect heat.

I used to LOVE these beans from Texas Roadhouse, so happy I can recreate them at home now. That smoky flavor is just the best with the beans!

    1. In the oven with canned – add liquid smoke – just a few dashes to get the smoky flavor – 300 for 1 hour and turn up to 400 for 30 minutes

  3. do you put the green beans in the pan frozen or thaw them out? also what type of wood chips are best and do you smoke the entire time?

    1. yes – frozen in the pan

i don’t use wood chips – i use pellets – I use the Traeger mix but maple & cherry are good for veggies

      yes – smoke entire time

Absolutely loved these. I will partially cook the bacon first next time because it took a long time for it to crisp up – but wow. Flavor heaven!

So fabulous! Made this at the campground on our Traeger and it rocked. Would partook the bacon first next time.

Iโ€™m making today for Thanksgiving and precooked the bacon and starting it on the stove until the turkey is done and then will finish on the Smokefire.

    Adore this recipe!!
