Maid Rites are one of my absolute favorite Iowa meals. For this recipe – I took the delicious Maid Rite meat and made a crescent braid. Plus I added cheese, pickles & more to the filling! It’s a great weeknight meal that the whole family will love!

What is a Maid Rite?

If you’re not familiar – a Maid Rite is also known as a loose-meat sandwich – which you might remember from back in the days of Roseanne! But in Iowa – it’s our signature dish! It’s sort of a manwich without the sauce – my ex-husband used to refer to it as a fall-apart burger. Whatever you call it – I call it tasty!!!

The thing is with a Maid Rite – I love the flavor of the meat – but I like to try using it in a variety of ways. I’ve made Cheese-Rites, Sliders, Biscuit Bites – and today – a Crescent Braid! I can’t wait to see what else I’ll come up with. ๐Ÿ™‚

What’s in the Maid Rite Crescent Braid?

Maid Rites are pretty basic and I’ll bet you have everything in your cupboard right now! Here’s what you need:

  • Ground beef – I recommend 80/20 so it’s got some fat in it
  • Beef Bouillon – I love Better than Bouillon brand – but you can use regular bouillon cubes or beef broth if you have some
  • Brown sugar
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Soy sauce – if you only have one or the other of this and Worcestershire – just double up – they’re a good sub for each other
  • Crescent Roll dough
  • Land O’Lakes American Cheese – get it in a chunk so you can grate it
  • Dill pickle slices
  • Ketchup & Mustard

How do you make a Crescent Braid?

  • Preheat the oven to 375 and get a cookie sheet ready by lining it with parchment paper – it’s the best non-stick ever!
  • Partially brown the ground beef for 3-4 minutes
  • Add the bouillon, water, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire and soy sauce. Continue cooking the ground beef until the liquid is absorbed. Don’t overcook your ground beef as it will still cook more in the oven. Remove from heat.
  • Roll out the crescent sheet on your parchment paper
  • Spread 3/4 of the meat down the center of the sheet. Top with half the cheese and half the pickles. Squirt ketchup and mustard down the meat as well.
  • Cut 10 strips on each side of the dough and fold them over the meat topping in a braided style.
  • Bake for 20 minutes until lightly browned
  • Remove from the oven and add the remaining meat and cheese to the top of the braid.
  • Bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese has melted and the braid is golden brown
  • Top with remaining pickles and more ketchup & mustard
