Loaded Mashed Potato Ingredients

This Loaded Mashed Potatoes recipe has very simple ingredients – potatoes, cream, butter and the toppings!

  • Potatoes – this recipe uses about 2 pounds of potatoes. I prefer Yukon Gold (5-6 medium) – I think they are mild and smooth and mash the best – but you could also use Red Potatoes or Russet Potatoes
  • Butter – can’t make taters without them – recommend using salted butter
  • Heavy Cream – you can swap with cream or sour cream if you like
  • Salt & Black Pepper – add this to taste – I like more salt than pepper
  • Bacon – 3-4 slices of cooked bacon for the top (maybe 1/2 a slice for sharing with the dogs)
  • Cheddar Cheese – CoJack is my favorite cheese for things like this but shredded Cheddar works great as well and is what they use at Chili’s
  • Scallions – dice those green ends off of your green onions and sprinkle on top for crunch after you remove from the oven. You could also use fresh chives.

How to Make Chili’s Loaded Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes are shockingly easy – here are the step by step instructions to loading those potatoes just like Chili’s does for the ultimate comfort food!

  • Preheat oven to 400º F and spray a square baking dish with non-stick spray.
  • Put potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tbsp salt to water. Put on stove on high heat and bring to a boil. Boil for 20 minutes or until fork tender.
  • While potatoes are boiling, fry bacon (on stove or in air fryer). I recommend you slightly undercook bacon as it will continue cooking in oven. When done, set aside on paper towels to cool and then rough chop into 1/2″ pieces.
  • Preheat oven to 400º and spray a square baking dish with non-stick spray
  • Drain the potatoes and return to the pot. Add in the cream and butter.
  • Mash by hand until well blended using a potato masher. It’s fine to have some chunks.
    • Using a hand mixer might seem easier – but you can easily go from perfect to gluey in about 3 seconds. Mashing by hand is always my preference!
  • Season with salt and pepper.
