Air Fryer Salmon Teriyaki Ingredients

Ingredients are simple for this Air Fryer Teriyaki Salmon recipe – you likely have everything you need in the pantry already!

  • Salmon – this recipe makes enough teriyaki for 4 salmon fillets but you’ll likely only be able to fit 2 in the air fryer
    • Frozen Salmon – let thaw in refrigerator overnight – these are typically even thickness and smaller – so take about 8 minutes to cook
    • Fresh Salmon Fillets – these are usually thicker and will take 9-10 minutes of cook time
  • Teriyaki Sauce – Authentic Japanese teriyaki sauce combines soy sauce, sugar, mirin and sake to create a distinct flavor. Many Americanized versions add honey, garlic and ginger for a sweetness and bite.
    • Bottled – I love a Hawaiian-style Teriyaki with pineapple juice
    • Homemade Teriyaki sauce is easy to make with simple ingredients: soy sauce, brown sugar, water, cider vinegar, ginger, garlic and corn starch.
  • Garnish – sprinkle with diced scallions and sesame seeds

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Soy Sauce – you can easily swap out low sodium soy sauce as this has plenty of salt on its own. You can also use tamari or coconut aminos instead.
  • Cider Vinegar – sub out with rice vinegar, mirin or white wine vinegar
  • Brown Sugar – swap with honey and you can also add pineapple juice for additional citrus flavor and sweetness
  • Ginger & Garlic – Fresh ginger is a must for this recipe and you can use garlic cloves or the jarred minced garlic

How to Make Teriyaki Salmon in the Air Fryer

Depending on the thickness of your salmon filets, your cooking time may vary from 7-10 minutes. I recommend undercooking because you can always add 1-2 minutes more. Salmon is best served medium rare so it’s very tender when you flake the filet.

  • Rinse salmon and pat dry with paper towels
  • In a small saucepan, over medium heat, mix together all ingredients except for corn starch. Whisk together.
  • Simmer for 5 min until reduced by 1/2.
  • Add corn starch and whisk, continue to simmer until reduced 1/2 again.
  • Remove sauce from heat and pour sauce into a shallow bowl
  • Dip salmon filets in teriyaki and place in air fryer basket
    • If salmon has skin, place salmon skin-side down and there’s no need to flip. You will likely want to use parchment paper in the air fryer to prevent sticking.
  • Air fry at 360º for 3-5 min
  • Flip filets in pan and baste with additional Teriyaki glaze. Air fry an additional 3-5 minutes.
    • Salmon is medium rare at 125º internal temperature
  • Remove cooked salmon and serve with rice pilaf and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds

Tips, Tricks & FAQs

Can I use this sauce as a teriyaki marinade?

Yes – definitely! You can place the filets in the sauce and refrigerate as a marinade for about 15-20 minutes to infuse more flavor into your salmon.

Can I use bottled Teriyaki Sauce?

Yes – any bottled sauce will work just fine.

Can I use frozen salmon fillets?

Yes! I did for this recipe. If you’re using frozen, you can thaw in refrigerator overnight or rinse with cool water until thawed. Salmon thaws quickly.

How do you store and reheat leftover salmon?

Store leftovers in an airtight container (I like these glass ones) in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the air fryer on 250º for 3-4 minutes or microwave for 1-2 minutes.
