Making asparagus on the Traeger adds a smoky flavor that you’ll love! It’s very subtle but so delicious and makes asparagus taste even better. Asparagus is one of the easiest vegetables to cook and is a great side dish for any meal.

Why Does This Recipe Work
I loved smoking this asparagus and imparting the flavor from the wood pellets into the asparagus. This is a longer way to cook asparagus – but if you’re already smoking something – you might as well take advantage of the space and make veggies too!

Ingredients for Smoked Asparagus
Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetable and is delicious with just a little olive oil, lemon and salt. Here’s what I used:
- asparagus
- olive oil
- Lemon herb seasoning – I love this Old Bay Lemon Herb Seasoning – it’s got just the right balance of flavors! If you don’t have this, you can use garlic, sea salt, black pepper and lemon juice or a lemon pepper blend.

How to make Asparagus on a Pellet Grill
I was already cooking Smoked Wings on the Traeger and used the extra space for this smoked asparagus – from there – it’s super simple!
- Turn on your Traeger to the SMOKE setting. Once smoke dissipates, preheat Traeger temperature to 200ºF
- Trim asparagus by bending about 1/3 from the bottom of the stem. Asparagus will naturally break at the right point. Discard the woody end and just use the end with the tree top.
- On a cookie sheet or in a large bowl, drizzle asparagus spears with olive oil & seasoning
- Once smoker is up to temp, place asparagus directly on grill grates or in a grilling basket
- Smoke for 45 minutes, use tongs to toss halfway thru
- Remove asparagus from grill and serve with lemon wedges and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese

Tips, Tricks & FAQs
Look for asparagus stalks that are firm, smooth and not at all rubbery or bendy. The tips of the asparagus should be closed and compact, free from spreading or softness. I like to choose thinner stalks as well – thick asparagus stalks tend to be woody in texture.
Bend the asparagus about 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the stalk. It will naturally break at the right point. Discard the end and keep the rest for eating!
It should be tender and softer than when raw but not completely limp.
If you’re grilling asparagus at 350º – it will likely only take 15 minutes. Smoking at a lower temp like this at 200º will take approx 45 minutes. But that extra time allows the asparagus to soak up that smoky flavor.
Yup! I did! That’s why you’re here!
Yes definitely! It’s still good when it’s limp – but you definitely don’t want it mushy.
Yes – that is the objective. Raw asparagus is a bit crunchy for me.
I’m all about my air fryer for asparagus because it’s so quick. That said, sauteeing in a little butter on the stove is also delicious. You can oven roast at 400º for 20 minutes or use this recipe for smoking. It’s all good!
There are many flavors of pellets that work in your Traeger pellet grill. I keep it simple and always use the Traeger Signature Blend which is a blend of Maple and Cherry. That said if you’re looking for something specific for vegetables, Maple is great because of it’s mild flavor.
I highly doubt you’ll have any leftovers but if you do, store in an airtight container. If you have an air fryer, reheat for 3 minutes at 300º. If not, just microwave for 30 seconds.

What to serve with Smoked Asparagus
More than likely, your main dish is going to take longer than the asparagus, but if you’ve got the Traeger going, you might as well add the asparagus before you’re done. Here’s a few of my favorites:
