What can I cook in an air fryer?

Chances are - a lot of folks are asking that question this morning! I know more than a few folks that got an air fryer this Christmas and now they're asking - what do I do with it?

I'm here to help you dig into those questions that you have! Feel free to ask your questions in the comments and I've got you covered!

You can also find lots of recipes in my Air Fryer Recipes section or in my Air Fryer Facebook group!
First, let me say - I don't really think it matters what kind of air fryer you have - whether it's the oven kind or the basket kind - it's still heating up quick and cooking with circulating air.
So what next? Make space on your counter for it - because I predict this will quickly become your new favorite kitchen appliance. I have a Philips XL and use it at least 4 days a week!

How do I cook chicken in the air fryer?

Chicken wings are the #1 thing you should try because they are the easiest! Whether you are using frozen wings (these from Perdue Farms are perfect - preseasoned! 14 minutes at 400 degrees - shake half way through) or you make your own from fresh - wings are so simple.

You can also do chicken breasts and thighs. In my opinion - it's really great if you bread them first - it holds in the juices better. I did a pickle juice brine and it worked great!

With everything air fryer - I recommend doing LESS time - you can temp it and see if it's done and always add more time. But you can't undo overcooked dry chicken! (Get an instant read meat thermometer - life changing!)

How do I cook eggs in an air fryer?

The only way I've tried eggs in the air fryer is hard boiled and then breaded & fried. Now hard boiled eggs are SO EASY - I put 6 in my basket fryer (but could have put more in) and air fried them for 17 minutes at 250 degrees. The shells popped off SO EASILY!

I made these "Deep Fried" Deviled Eggs in the air fryer and they were so easy! Basically you do the same thing anytime you bread something for the air fryer. Here's 3 steps:
  1. Flour - You can use regular flour but I like to use Hooter's Wing Breading - it adds a little more zing!
  2. Egg - Crack an egg or two depending on how much you're breading
  3. Panko - I love Panko Breading - this brand comes in a ziplock bag which helps. I always have a box or two on hand. Sometimes you can find a cilantro & lime variety - if you do - grab it!
** Must have tool! ** I bought this set of three interlocking trays on Pampered Chef from my friend Melissa. I use them every time I'm breading something. They're just the right size, lock together so it's no mess between the trays and clean up easily! $25!

How do I cook pork in the air fryer?

Pork is such a forgiving meat - it's juicy and is good just about anyway you make it. My favorite way is to take a boneless chop or a boneless loin sliced about an inch thick - then pound the heck out of it and get it as thin as you can. Then using the breading mentioned above - bread and air fry. Here's the recipe for my Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin Sandwich.

If you're making a pork loin - like one of those pre-seasoned ones from the grocery store - I would start with 1/2 the time that it recommends on the bag. Then - temp your meat - and add more time in 3 minute increments. Pork is ready to go at 145 degrees - it's completely safe.

Can you air fry bacon? How do you air fry bacon?

Bacon is super easy - once you make it in the air fryer - you'll never use a skillet again! Lay your slices in and set it for 8-13 minutes - depending on how crispy you like your bacon. I go through making air fryer bacon in detail in this post.

How do I cook steak in the air fryer?

This one is so easy! I like to marinate my steak first - I don't even try to come up with a recipe - my bestie has the best steak marinade recipe ever! She makes it every time I visit her! OMG - so good!

Then you air fry at 350 for 8-15 minutes - depending on how you like your steak. As you can see - I like my steak rare/medium rare. You can also cut up your steak into bite size pieces - just lower the time more on the 8-10 minute time because they'll cook more quickly.

How do I cook fish and shrimp in the air fryer?

Fish is so easy and delicious in the air fryer! I have found that thinner, flaky fish cooks better - things like tilapia and perch - rather than halibut. The thicker white fish gets a little rubbery. Thicker pink fish like salmon though - is AMAZING in the air fryer.

With thin, white fish - you can marinate it or bread it. I made the air fryer tilapia above the first week I had my air fryer and it was perfect! Crispy and flaky! I also did a healthy fish taco where I marinated the tilapia and then flaked it into tortillas - omg - so good!

Salmon is the EASIEST thing in the air fryer - I put a little barbecue sauce on top and air fry at 350 for 10 minutes - and you're done!

Shrimp is a whole other beast! I always recommend using raw shrimp - cooked shrimp is for cocktail sauce! In the air fryer, a light seasoning or breading and 3-4 minutes is all you need for shrimp. (I did that in my Air Fryer Shrimp Taco Salad) Or you can get fancy and make this jalapeno popper shrimp - omg - it's amazing! I ate all of them myself!!!

How do I cook vegetables in the air fryer?

This is my FAVORITE discovery! You can put pretty much any vegetable in the air fryer!!! There are pretty much two ways to do vegetables: breaded (yup - flour, egg, panko) or roasted with just a little olive oil, salt and pepper. The length of time is going to depend on the vegetable and how hearty it is - but they're all delicious! Here are some of my favorites:

- Cheddar Jalapeno Air Fryer Avocado Fries - this one is fun because instead of the flour/egg - I used cheddar jalapeno dip! OMG so good!
- Air Fryer Acorn Squash - omg - this is amazing - it gets such a good roasted flavor!
- Air Fryer Zucchini - zucchini doesn't know what hit it - this is amazing!

Can you cook canned or frozen biscuits in the air fryer?

Heck yeah!!! I did a whole post about air fryer time and temps for the pre-made biscuits, crescents, cinnamon rolls and more!  The rule of thumb is half whatever the can says for the oven - then add a minute or two if you need to.

But - let me tell you - my favorite air fryer recipe - is biscuit donuts!! OMG - they're delicious and so easy! This is literally a must-try recipe for your air fryer! So yummy!

How do I make frozen fries and pizza rolls in the air fryer?

Sure! That's actually probably the first thing most people make. It's easy - the rule of thumb is start at HALF the time on the bag for the oven instructions - same temp. I never preheat my air fryer either. Again - if something isn't quite done - add time in 2-3 minute increments - but half the time is a pretty good estimation.

Can you use batter in the air fryer?

I wouldn't - I haven't tried it yet - but the circulating air will blow the batter off the items and can gunk up your heating element.

What else can I make in the air fryer?

The first place to go would to my Air Fryer Recipe Page! I have lots of great ideas and I publish a new air fryer recipe every Friday!

I've also made pizza in the air fryer using mini-naan bread, grilled peaches (yes - grilled peaches!!!), baked potatoes and even grilled sandwiches!

If you have any questions I didn't answer - let me know! If there's something you want to know if it can be cooked in the air fryer - let me know that too and I'll add it to my list!

  1. I am on a low sodium diet..so I have to be careful to use low sodium marinated?? Any ideas??

    1. i would stick with homemade marinades - maybe olive oil, balsamic vinegar and seasonings that you like
